Free Excel Template
Free Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) Template (Excel)
A clear ITP template for construction work activities. Set out what gets inspected or tested, who signs it off, what counts as a pass, and which records to keep. Comes with two worked example rows. Free to download, no email required.
Who it is for
Site engineers, quality managers, foremen and subcontractors who need to plan and record inspections and tests on a construction project. Use it to agree hold and witness points with the client and consultants before work starts, then to record the results as you go.
What is inside
The workbook has two sheets: the ITP itself, with two greyed example rows you can overwrite, and an instructions sheet that explains each column and the difference between hold and witness points.
Columns on the ITP sheet
- Activity / Task. The work being inspected or tested, e.g. waterproofing to wet areas.
- Reference Spec Clause. The specification section or Australian Standard that sets the requirement.
- Inspection / Test Required. The specific check or test to be performed.
- Acceptance Criteria. What a pass looks like: the measurable or observable standard to be met.
- Responsibility. Who carries out the inspection or test, e.g. site engineer, testing lab.
- Hold / Witness Point. Whether the step is a hold point (work stops until sign-off) or a witness point.
- Records Required. The evidence to keep, e.g. checklist, NATA certificate, photographs.
- Status. Where the item is up to: Open, Passed, Failed, Closed.
Hold points and witness points
Hold point
A mandatory stop. Work cannot proceed past this point until the nominated party has inspected and released it.
Witness point
A notified point. The nominated party is invited to attend, but if they do not, work may continue.
How to use it
- 1.Download the file and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
- 2.Overwrite or delete the two greyed example rows.
- 3.Add one row per activity, referencing your own specification clauses and Australian Standards.
- 4.Mark each step as a hold or witness point, then record the status and keep the nominated records as work is inspected and tested.
HandoverPoint tracks inspections against your handover
A standalone ITP spreadsheet lives apart from the rest of your handover. In HandoverPoint, inspection and test records sit alongside the QA and ITPs section of the handover register, so the evidence a client needs at Practical Completion is tracked in one place with a full audit trail.
